What is Jane’s Walk?
Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking tours inspired by Jane Jacobs. The walks get people to tell stories about their communities, explore their cities, and connect with neighbours. Jane’s Walk was founded in 2006 as a living, walking commemoration of Jane Jacobs and her legacy. The first year, there were 27 walks in Toronto on the first weekend in May.
Who is Jane Jacobs?
Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was a writer and activist best known for her writings about cities. Her first book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961), upended the ideas of modernist city planning and offered a new vision of diverse cities made for and by the people who live in them. If you want to learn more, check out Jane's 10 Big Ideas, or watch the documentary Citizen Jane.
What happens on a Jane's Walk?
Jane’s Walks are free, community-led walking conversations inspired by the ideas of urbanist Jane Jacobs. Each walk is unique and led by volunteers who share stories, history, and insights about their neighborhood. Walks encourage discussion, exploration, and connection with others.
Is registration required?
Nope! Jane’s Walks are free and open to everyone—just show up at the meeting point and join in. Be sure to arrive on time so you don't miss your group leaving!
Can I lead a walk?
Absolutely! Everyone can lead a walk because everyone has a unique perspective to share on their experience of the city. Check out our Lead A Walk page for more details.
How do I find out about walks?
Walk listings are posted on our Schedule page as they are confirmed, beginning in April. You can also follow us on social media or sign up for our newsletter to stay updated on this year's schedule.
Didn't you have an Eventbrite page before?
Yes, in the past, we used Eventbrite to share walk listings. Now, most walk details can be found directly on our Schedule page and social media. Be sure to check there for the latest schedule.
What happens if it rains?
We walk in the rain! Jane’s Walks are rain or shine, so dress for the weather and come prepared.
Are walks accessible?
Accessibility varies depending on the route and location. We ask all walk leaders to fill out as much accessibility information about their walk as possible to support you making an informed decision about whether the walk is right for you. If you have questions about accessibility, please email us and we can reach out to the walk leader on your behalf. For popular walks, we equip walk leaders with a portable microphone so they can be heard more easily by a larger group.
